# In The Kitchen: Make Your Own Rice Milk

Aren’t these some of the prettiest milk bottles you’ve ever seen?

I got these at the Container Store for about $4 each. The covers are plastic lined, and they hold a quart. (You can also purchase the covers separately.) If you need a lot of them, they are also available on Amazon, Quattro Stagioni Milk Bottle, Set of 12. A case sells for about$46, a bit of a savings. If you don’t need that many, consider going together with a friend and splitting them!

I wanted them to put home made vegan milks in. I prefer to store the milks in glass, because it is non-reactive. I also wanted this kind of shape to make it easier to pour. These are just perfect!

The first home made milk I tried was rice milk, since it’s about the easiest and the least expensive. A quart of organic Rice Dream can cost any where between $3 and$6 depending on where you buy it. It cost about forty-five cents to make a quart of your own!

I use rice milk all the time for making ice cream and on my breakfast. I also add it to silken tofu in the blender, depending on what I’m making and how creamy I want it. It works for thickening soups and sauces. It’s one of my favorites. So it just makes sense to make my own.

Here’s my setup.

Blender

#### Ingredients

1 cup of cooked organic brown rice

4 cups of water

#### Method

Put all of the rice and about half the water in the blender.

Blend until smooth and creamy.

Add the rest of the water and continue blending until mixed.

Store in a glass container in the refrigerator. Shake well before using.

#### Notes

You can add a little bit of sweetener and/or vanilla if you’re more used to the commercial products. I think it tastes fine as is.

I cook several cups of rice at one time. Then I divide up the cooked rice into 1-cup freezer safe containers, and freeze them. That way, I can pull out a measured amount of rice for milk, or other dishes whenever I need it.

#### Conclusion

Here’s the bottle full of rice milk I just made.

It will probably be half gone by tomorrow night… peach ice cream! Yum!

Actually, I may buy some more of these. I can think of many uses in addition to milk, including Kefir and carrot juice!

Enjoy!
